Patio Furniture – Make Sure You Don’t Neglect Yours

May 22nd, 2008

It happens. Sometimes we forget about those pieces of furniture that have given us so much over the years. Look in the backyard. Has the family forgotten about the patio furniture that was always there when you wanted to enjoy your time in the sun? But once you moved inside more often, it was left to sit, rotting in the elements. Before you plan a funeral for those patio furniture pieces, there may be a way to bring them back to life. As you go out to assess that old wood patio furniture set you may think there’s no hope for it, and it’s time for a trip to the road for the garbage truck. But, not so fast. There are often ways to save something that looks lost.

It’s time for a patio furniture tune up.

First, do a hardware check. Does it have all the screws and bolts it needs to be an operational piece of patio furniture? Next, check if those bolts and screws are tight enough. If not, tighten them up to make it a solid piece, once again.

Once you know there is hope for this to still be a sturdy piece of patio furniture, it’s time to look at the wood. Take a good look at it. There may be some dry, cracking wood at the surface level. But, how far down does that really go? While the surface may look a little worn, there could be beautiful wood just below that, waiting to be let free. It’s your job to free that wood with some sand paper or a pressure washer. Take your time with this. You don’t want to go down further than you have to, just get to the good wood and stop. Once you have done this with a whole piece of patio furniture, you may be shocked to see that it looks a lot like it did when you first bought it.

At this point you can leave it in the current natural color, or stain the wood to change it to the color you want.

Now the chore is keeping it that way. You have just stripped the wood down, so it’s vulnerable. You need to apply a layer of weather coating, to finish the job.

You also need to make a conscious effort to take care of these pieces in the future. Patio furniture can be with you for a long time, with the proper attention. Make sure to regularly check on the patio furniture pieces and when you notice the weather coating is starting to wear off, give it a new coat. Make sure to clean the furniture pieces regularly as well, as dirt and grime can work their way into the wood, causing damage. You should really put your patio furniture on your house-cleaning schedule. Once a month you should dedicate the time to clean the pieces, and oil them up if, with lemon oil, to see the wood really shine.

Teak Patio Furniture - The Finer Things in Life

May 22nd, 2008

Teak, a mixed yellow-brown wood that is well known for its radiance, durability, and strength, is used in gorgeous furniture. Especially high-grade furniture like teak patio furniture. The reason why teak is used for patio furniture is because it is highly resistant to bugs and because teak is such a hard wood, it is also extremely resistant to warping over time or because of the weather. If you don’t believe that this is durable enough, here is a well-known fact - teak has been used for decks, railings, even seating on boats. That’s right, on ships for years! Things that are in constant contact with the weather. Getting a teak patio furniture piece is one way to ensure you’ll have something to pass on to future generations.

Teak patio furniture, despite the durability of the wood itself, still need to be properly cared for and maintained with this in mind. When you purchase your pieces, ask whether there is a warranty against things the wood should be naturally resistant to. If your patio is covered, you probably don’t pay much attention to the care and maintenance of your teak patio furniture.

After all, your patio is covered, so for the most part your furniture is protected from the most of the weather. However, if your patio is not covered and exposed full time to the elements, it might be a good idea to cover it in order to protect it. This is more important if your teak patio furniture is something that you use only rarely. Your teak patio furniture is an important piece of furniture and can be just as expensive as your regular dining room table.

There is a point in time when not taking care of your teak deck furniture is more appropriate than proper care and that is when you want it to take on the weathered silver-gray look that is especially stunning on a patio. However, if you choose not to go with the silver-gray, a patio furniture cover might be what you’re looking for in the way of protection.

The choice of material is important, so be sure to do your research on your furniture cover. You’ll want a heavy material that’s weather resistant and is going to offer padding against bumps and other things hitting it. No matter what you choose, picking a teak patio furniture piece is one way to have a lasting piece of fine furniture for generations.

What to Look for When Choosing Outdoor Patio Furniture

May 22nd, 2008

Having outdoor patio furniture is nice when you have a pretty day, and you just want to sit outside. Sometimes you may even want to enjoy breakfast outside on the patio, and having a nice set of furniture for this purpose makes breakfast outside on a spring morning all the better. However, while you are shopping for patio furniture to go outside of your home, there are some things you will want to consider.

If you are looking into getting wooden outdoor patio furniture, you will want to make sure that the wood that the furniture is made from, is treated. Many times the manufacturer will treat wood that is used for furniture outside, so that it is able to withstand the weather, and will not rot as fast as furniture made out of wood that is not treated. So, because of this, you can see why making sure the wooden furniture that you purchase is treated, can be important. While you may pay a little more money for wooden outdoor furniture, you will definitely get your money’s worth in the long run. This is because the treated wooden furniture will last longer.

While you will find some great wooden outdoor furniture, you will also find some great pieces that are made of plastic. Plastic patio furniture will hold up as far as weather is concerned, and a table top that is made of plastic will be easier to clean as well. However, there are just some people that do not find any appeal what so ever in plastic furniture. While there are some that do not like plastic patio furniture, there are also some people the prefer it. Many people prefer the color variety that you will find when you are shopping for plastic patio furniture, as well as the different styles that are available.

Maybe you are more into metal outdoor patio furniture. You will find that wrought iron patio furniture is great to have. If you like the wrought iron look, you will be in for a treat. However, you should make sure that the wrought iron furniture that you choose is treated so that it will not rust. You will be able to find many table and chair sets that are in wrought iron to go outside.

Outdoor patio furniture is practical, and necessary if you like to spend a good amount of time outside on your patio. If you have a covered patio, you will not need to worry much about the treated furniture. However, if your patio is uncovered and open, you will want to make sure that your patio furniture is protected in some way or another.
